Since last summer, she has worked in Rocklands’ vineyards harvesting grapes, managing the tasting room, and doing everything in between.
If you’ve ever met Hannah, you know she always has a smile on her face. I sat down with her the other day to find out what makes her so happy.
Q: How did you come to Rocklands Farm?
After college, I was looking for a job where I could get my hands dirty. I was an environmental studies major, but I didn’t really get to work outside. I had a summer job at a small farm in Greensboro, NC, that made me fall in love with everything about farms.
Rocklands Farm took a chance on me. They hired a 21-year-old straight out of college to harvest grapes. I hardly had any experience drinking wine, let alone harvesting it and selling it!
Q: Did anything stick out to you during your first few days on the farm?
I remember being struck by how authentic everyone was — no one here tries to be anything they’re not. The first night I was there, we celebrated one of the staff’s birthdays and I felt welcomed into the family (also known as the "farmily").
I also remember thinking it looked like the quintessential farm. The grapes were green, there were summer evening thunderstorms, and everything was in bloom. I couldn’t get enough.
Q: What's one of your favorite Rocklands memories?
I’ve always loved farmily dinners with the other staff. When you get to share good food and good conversation with good people in the most beautiful, quiet little corner of the world, it’s a truly wonderful way to be reminded of and appreciate the many blessings in your life. I always leave farmily dinners with a full belly and a fuller heart.
Q: Do you have any takeaways from your time here that you'll bring to your next adventure?
One thing I’ve gained since working here is patience. In farming, there’s so much out of our control. Millennials think everything is in our control, and available whenever we want it. With farming, I’ve learned that you can’t rush anything. I just try to enjoy every moment.
I’m a person of place, so where I am is really important to who I am. I'm excited for this next chapter, but I'll be leaving half of my heart behind when I leave Rocklands!
Rocklands Farm will get to enjoy the gift of Hannah for just a few months, after which she plans to return home to Wilmington, NC, and attend school to pursue another dream of social work.
For now, Hannah can be found in the vineyard, the tasting room, or chasing around baby animals. Make sure you say hi next time you visit!
