What to Expect at a Barn Wedding in Maryland
A Complete Guide to Getting Married at Rocklands Farm Winery
If you have been searching for a barn wedding venue in Maryland, chances are you already know what you are looking for. You want something that feels real. Exposed wood beams, open sky, a setting with a little history. You want your wedding to feel like the two of you, not like every other wedding your guests have attended in a hotel ballroom.
Rocklands Farm Winery in Poolesville, Maryland is exactly that kind of place. Tucked into the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County, about 30 minutes from Washington DC, Rocklands is a working farm and winery that has been hosting weddings for years.
The Setting
Rocklands sits on 34 acres of Maryland countryside bordering Seneca Creek State Park. The farm is active. There are animals in the fields, flowers growing in the rows, and a winery producing handcrafted low-intervention wines onsite. It is not a barn venue that used to be a farm. It is still a farm, and that distinction matters when you are standing in the middle of it on your wedding day.
The property includes several distinct spaces that flow naturally from one part of the day to the next. The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception each have their own area, and the whole progression feels intentional rather than improvised.
The Stone House: Getting Ready
The day starts in the 1870s Stone House, built from locally quarried Seneca sandstone by the Allnutt family. The bones of the building are original: the architecture, the light, the preserved historic detail. The entire first floor is reserved for the wedding party on the day of the event, including a spacious dining room, separate dressing rooms for each side of the couple, a bathroom, and access to the kitchen.
The Stone House Lawn: The Ceremony
Ceremonies at Rocklands typically take place on the Stone House Lawn at sunset. It is not unusual for one of the farm's cows or sheep to make an appearance in the background.
The Bank Barn Yard: Cocktail Hour
From the ceremony, guests move to the yard outside the historic Bank Barn for cocktail hour. The space is generous enough for barrel tables, vintage furniture, lawn games, and bistro lights overhead. When the sun goes down and the lights come up, it is as romantic as it sounds.
The Bank Barn: The Reception
The Bank Barn is the centerpiece of the reception and one of the most beautiful barn wedding spaces in the DC area. Inside you will find a built-in bar, two loft areas, a dance floor, and bistro lighting throughout. The sliding doors on the far end open directly to views of the pond and vineyard. The barn is not air-conditioned, which is why we book most weddings in the spring and fall when the cross-ventilation from the large doors on either side keeps the space comfortable.
The maximum guest count at Rocklands Farm Vineyard is 120.
The Wine and the Flowers
One of the things that makes a barn wedding at Rocklands different from a barn wedding at a rented venue is that everything here comes from the farm. The wine served at your wedding is made on site. Handcrafted low-intervention wine from Maryland and Mid-Atlantic fruit, including estate-grown red blends, sparkling wines, and dry rosés.
The flowers are grown here too. Anna Joy Glenn, co-owner of Sungold Flower Co., designs seasonal farm-grown florals for weddings at Rocklands, cut fresh from the fields and arranged to reflect exactly what is growing at peak when your wedding takes place.
What Is Included
Rocklands weddings are full-service in the best sense. The package includes farm-grown flowers for the ceremony, reception, and wedding party, coordination from a dedicated wedding planner for vendor management and aesthetic curation, and multiple planning meetings leading up to the day. Your catering and bar service are provided through Rocklands' curated list of preferred caterers, all of whom know the space well. Photographers, officiants, bands and DJs, and shuttle service are arranged separately.
Getting There
Rocklands is located in Poolesville, Maryland, about 30 minutes from Washington, DC, and 20 minutes from Bethesda and Northern Virginia. The drive in is scenic enough that guests tend to comment on it. Many couples arrange shuttle service from DC hotels
